A Fine Hotel – Lake District Luxury

The Swan Hotel at Grasmere offers elegance and luxury at affordable prices. Built in the seventeenth century as a coaching inn, and mentioned in Wordsworth’s poem The Waggoner, the hotel now provides relaxed period accommodation for walkers and cyclists who want to enjoy the open sunny vistas in summer and blazing log fires in winter. I am told that Sir Walter Scott and William Wordsworth stayed here and enjoyed the traditionally furnished accommodation. Since their day, the Swan has been refurbished to provide every modern amenity.

The individually designed bedrooms are spacious and graceful. Executive Rooms have amazing views across the surrounding countryside. You can admire the landscaped gardens or dramatic Helm Crag from the luxury of your elegantly furnished room. Or you could opt for a Feature Room, with a special canopy or four-poster bed.

The historic candle lit Waggoner’s Restaurant serves the finest British cuisine, sourced from the surrounding area, with emphasis on organically grown products. The cuisine is accompanied by an outstanding wine list, including classic wines and some surprise vintages. The Walkers’ Bar offers a good selection of local ales and fine malts and is the ideal place to relax after the day’s exertions.

Aphrodite’s is a stunning luxury themed boutique hotel set in the heart of the Lake District, just a short walk from Bowness and Windermere, perfect for a honeymoon, anniversary, romantic weekend, anniversary, or just a quiet, romantic stay in a hotel Lake District.

These are the names of some of the hotel rooms which will tell you just what Aphrodite’s is all about: The Cleopatra, The Parisian, The Flintstones and the Tarzan and Jane. I think this gives you the general idea. I guess that the Tarzan and Jane is designed for the younger end of the market and The Parisian for the more mature clientele!

Whichever room you choose, you will not be disappointed. Each room has a hot tub or aqua spa massage bath, a picturesque patio and a log burning stoves or open fire. As an example of the room style, let me describe the Cleopatra Room. It is an open plan arrangement, with Egyptian furniture, a lavish bed with ornate canopy and top quality pocket sprung mattress with duck down quilt and pillows, a large sunken aqua massage bath with power shower and rugs and fabrics of the mood for the Cleopatra era. You will find that the satellite TV and free internet access do not detract from the historic theme.

Aphrodite’s is famous for its superb organic food, which is mainly sourced from local farmers and suppliers, particularly Howbarrow Organic Farm located nearby. The hearty breakfast menu includes fresh homemade breads, free range eggs and locally reared bacon. Lunch and dinner menus comprise local meats and seasonal fresh vegetables. All local fruit and vegetables are freshly picked for added flavour.

Aphrodite’s takes the environment seriously. As well as using organic foodstuffs, the hotel has a bio-mass boiler which is carbon neutral, and the electricity comes from a renewable source. You will find many unusual features including the incredible dancing fountain in the garden which in the evening ‘performs’ to light and music. Aphrodite’s attracts many celebrity guests, so you never know who you might meet!

Holbeck Ghyll is the ideal luxuryLake District hotel, combining opulent accommodation with an exceptional dining experience. You can find it between the lakeside towns of Ambleside and Bowness-on-Windermere, only a five minute drive from Windermere village, set in acres of spectacular woodland and outstanding natural beauty.

The hotel boasts amazing views of Windermere and some of the Lake District’s highest peaks, including Coniston Old Man, the Langdale Pikes andScafell Pike. Originally a Victorian hunting lodge, as can be seen from the stupendous architecture, the house has been converted to a luxury residence. It was built by the fifth Earl of Lonsdale, famous for the Lonsdale Belt, and still retains its original features including stained glass windows, fine plasterwork and carved wooden panelling throughout the house. The accommodation consists of fourteen elegant rooms and suites in the main house, with a further six equally exquisite rooms in The Lodge.

Each room has been individually and tastefully designed with comfort and convenience in mind. All rooms have great views either of the lake or the rolling green countryside. There are a variety of rooms and you can ask for king sized or four poster beds, or whirlpool baths or double showers, and views of Windermere or the fells.

In the classic oak-panelled restaurant, David the head chef personally supervises the menu and creates delicate dishes from locally sourced ingredients. I particularly enjoyed the extensive wine list which, I am told, has received several awards for quality and variety. The combination of luxurious accommodation, fine dining and excellent service make Holbeck Ghyll one of the finest places to stay in theLake District.

Set in 40 acres of grounds, with lake frontage and with the dramatic backdrop of the spectacular Lodore Falls, the house has 69 Fell and Lake View rooms, all of which have modern facilities. I took the spectacular Tower Room with amazing panoramic views. Fresh flowers and period furniture give the feel of a welcoming, and extremely comfortable private house.

The Lake View Restaurant is renowned for the excellent cuisine, prepared with flair and imagination to the highest of standards by the head chef, and complemented by an extensive wine list.

Lindeth Howe, Bowness, is a gorgeous country house hotel Lake District offering elegant accommodation and a stimulating dining experience. This was once the country retreat of author Beatrix Potter, who penned many of her famous works here. It was built in the nineteenth century and still retains the elegance of that stylish period, but has been carefully modernised to afford every modern convenience. Today it provides a serene luxurious environment for the hotel guests.

Each bedroom is uniquely designed, with all rooms offering breathtaking views over Lake Windermere, the landscaped gardens or the woodland and fells in the distance. I particularly liked the gracious period lounge and the contrasting modern sun terrace, each of which provided the ultimate in total relaxation. Marc, the head chef, personally supervises the restaurant, where he creates a selection of dishes that have made him a celebrity in the locality. The cuisine, accompanied by an excellent wine list, and the finest accommodation, make Lindeth Howe one of the supreme hotel Lake District locations.

Gilpin Lodge Country House Hotel (near Windermere) is a classic country house hotel Lake District. As one of the top Lake District hotels, it combines impeccably furnished bedrooms with a relaxed atmosphere. The original Edwardian country house, built in 1901 but extensively refurbished in 2009, has kept its antique Arts and Crafts charm, but has come to terms with modern interior design.

The house is owned and managed by the Cunliffe family who have been in the hotel business for generations and whose forbears lived in Gilpin Lodge in its early years. The building has moved beyond the original house, with extensions sympathetically added, all the while taking advantage of modern building design with spacious rooms and extensive windows providing natural light.

When I visit, I stay at the The Lake House, an extension with a spa on the ground floor with patio doors that open onto the lawn leading down to the lake.

In the restaurant, dining is treated as an experience to be relished to the full, both classical and modern cuisine emphasising local produce, prepared and served to the highest of standards with flair and imagination. The dishes are complemented by a wine list, which features over 200 items, with some very fine and interesting vintages.

The accommodation is in the modern wing and consists of seventy or so superbly decorated bedrooms and suites. When I was there recently, I took an Executive Deluxe Suite with a large bay window with a spectacular view of Gummers How. All rooms have spectacular views and when the light fails you can watch the plasma screen TV or relax in the Italian marble Jacuzzi bathroom.

The Spa pool and relaxation area is filled with natural light and therapists are available to restore body and mind.

Richard, the head chef, personally supervises the restaurant and brasserie, where he creates a range of dishes both traditional and modern, accompanied by a superb wine list. After dinner, the original 17th Century Coaching Inn provides traditional ales and all the modern drinks you could desire! The hotel lake district accommodation, the fine cuisine, and the extraordinary ambience together make the Lakeside Hotel one of the top hotel locations in the Lake District.
